Invest in eCommerce

eCommerce is the buying and selling of products or services via the internet.

The current market size of the global electronic commerce/online marketplace industry stands at an impressive $1.9 trillion and is expected to reach $2.7 trillion by 2023.

The eCommerce industry began its ascent to popularity back in 1994, when a company by the name of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) entered the industry specifically providing an online marketplace for books. The success of Amazon laid the foundation for the emergence of other eCommerce companies like eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) and Alibaba (NYSE: BABA), as well as the online commerce segments of brick-and-mortar stores such as Walmart (NYSE: WMT) and Costco (NASDAQ: COST). The evolution of shopping online has led to mammoth valuations for the companies in the eCommerce space as well as created headaches for the more traditional brick-and-mortar stores.

The eCommerce Industry

While some of these brick-and-mortar retailers have not been able to adapt to the changing retail ecosystem, the rise in eCommerce has created a competitive retail landscape that ultimately benefits the consumer. And contrary to the belief that brick-and-mortar is going the way of the dinosaur, this couldn’t be farthest from the truth as brick-and-mortar still makes up 82% of global retail revenue.

While physical retail stores are not disappearing anytime soon, there is no denying the fact that the online shopping industry and the companies that provide it are as lucrative and powerful as ever. Emerging markets like Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and India provide ample opportunity for eCommerce players. India especially is a rising hub of investment for eCommerce businesses due to the expectation of India’s eCommerce market growing 4x larger than that of the country’s overall retail space.

Major Developments

  • Amazon’s (NASDAQ: AMZN) online dominance is such a threat to traditional retail companies that not only is there a term specifically coined for the phenomenon, called the Amazon Effect (which pertains to the continued disruption of the retail space due to increased use of eCommerce), but the threat of Amazon was mentioned by management during 10% of all earnings calls back in 2017. The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 further solidified Amazon as the king of eCommervce as consumers flocked to the company for much-needed household products and investor demand added over 1/2 a trillion-dollars to the company’s market valuation.
  • In June 2018 Google (NASDAQ: GOOG), wanting a piece of the pie and sick of Amazon’s dominance, invested $550 million into Asian eCommerce company JD.com (NASDAQ: JD). This now benefits Google as they gain penetration to the growing Asian markets, a battleground for numerous global companies.
  • Target (NYSE: TGT), who doesn’t have a major presence in online shopping (only $4 billion of its $68 billion in revenue is attributable to online commerce compared to Walmart’s $16 billion of online sales) made a crucial move with their $550 million acquisition of Shipt, a same-day online delivery service.
  • Walmart (NYSE: WMT), a traditional brick-and-mortar store, understands the growing significance of online retail around the world and has forced itself into the eCommerce market. Attractive markets like India have led Walmart to take a 77% stake in Indian eCommerce company, Flipkart (which holds almost 40% of the Indian market share) for a reported $16 billion back in 2018, adding another $1.2 billion of investment in 2020. The acquisition is expected to contribute handsomely to Walmart’s 50% year-over-year growth in eCommerce sales.
  • Alibaba (NYSE: BABA) is still the #1 eCommerce company in the world’s most populous country, China, with over 50% share of the countries online commerce market. Not isolated to just China, Alibaba’s international online revenue grew 93% year-over-year.

The Future

As mentioned, the current global market size of eCommerce stands at $1.9 trillion. This number is expected to reach $2.7 trillion by 2023.

The widespread use of voice assistants, artificial intelligence, and even drones are going to further reshape the eCommerce landscape. 35% of consumers have already stated they have ordered products online with the use of a voice assistant such as Amazon Echo or Google Home and this number is expected to grow in the years to come. The technology of artificial intelligence is being used in tandem with NLP, or Natural Language Processing, to analyze human text and better understand our needs and wants in order to further customize our shopping experience. Amazon has launched a delivery system, Amazon Prime Air (experimental for now), which will get product into the hands of consumers within 30 minutes of ordering, all with the use of fully autonomous flying drones.

While traditional brick-and-mortar stores play catch-up and eCommerce companies battle each other for online dominance, we can expect more innovative and cost-effective ways for us to shop as the customer-centric world of retail continues to evolve.
