Invest in Cybersecurity

Cybercrime has grown with the evolution of the internet to become a major threat to both consumers and institutions alike. Announcements of major data breaches of corporations have become common place while consumers now incorporate cybersecurity software into their living expenses.

Equifax (NYSE: EFX) compromised the credit information of 143 million customers in 2017. The embarrassing details of customers of the dating site AshleyMadison were exposed in 2015 costing the company nearly $30 million in lawsuits and fines. In 2018, Marriott International (NASDAQ: MAR) was hacked compromising 500 million Starwood accounts. In 2019, the victim of the largest breach of the year went to mobile game developer Zynga (NASDAQ: ZNGA), who had information on 218 million customers exposed.

These occurrences (and many more not mentioned here) have been the catalyst for increasing cyber crime budgets of major corporations and organizations.

Cybersecurity

It is forecasted that nearly 125 billion devices will be connected to the internet by the year 2030. In time, we will have autonomous vehicles connected to a massive network, our homes will be filled with devices and appliances with their own IP addresses, and we will continue to conduct transactions via the internet, all resulting in sensitive information needing protection. On the enterprise level, the amount of data breaches that have recently occurred combined with the media scrutiny that follows, has been the driver for many companies to increase their cybersecurity budgets.

Back in 2016, Bank of America went as far as making their cybersecurity budget unlimited while Bloomberg has reported that financial firms spend an average of $3,000 on cybersecurity per employee.

The rise in data breaches combined with the explosion of the connected device revolution known as the Internet of Things, or IoT, has created a market ripe for protecting data as apparent in the estimated $6 trillion of cybercrime damages expected to cost firms by 2022.

As cyberattacks occur more frequently and the demand for products/services to counter these attacks rise, major players have been doubling down:

Major Developments

  • Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO), a communication equipment manufacturer with $50 billion in annual revenue, reported that cybersecurity is their fastest-growing business and will continue to be a focus of their company
  • Companies like Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN), and IBM (NYSE: IBM) have invested in the billions toward R & D to beef up cybersecurity measurements.
  • To kickstart 2018, Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) launched their own cybersecurity firm called Chronicle, a company so secretive that their technology is still not yet known (*though the success of the firm is now in question following Google’s acquisition).

The Future

Between the years 2004 – 2017, the cybersecurity market grew 35x from $3.5 billion to nearly $140 billion according to Cybersecurity Ventures.

This number expected to grow to $248 billion by 2023.

New and innovative technologies are being created to further strengthen cybersecurity. Artificial intelligence is being used to analyze and scan data for weak points, next-generation firewalls are reinforcing network infrastructure, and the use of biometric authentication is making it easier for consumers and enterprises alike to secure data by utilizing the human body’s biological characteristics. As the industry continues to innovate, and demand for cybersecurity products surges, both the revenue and valuations of companies in the cybersecurity space should impress.

We are living in the Information Age and as long as there is a need to protect this information, cybersecurity will be a crucial part of our society.
