Invest in Blockchain

One of the most hyped emerging technologies of the last decade (mainly due to the Bitcoin craze) Blockchain Technology is an internet-based technology. Blockchain is a list of digital records, or a ledger, that is decentralized (not controlled by any single entity) and maintained by the peer network using it. While society uses the phrase blockchain as a technology solely associated with cryptocurrencies, blockchain technology has the potential to innovate any industry that makes use of a database.

For example, think of the local bank you use and all the clients your bank services. Instead of the traditional way of relying on the bank to maintain records of client activity, blockchain technology would remove the bank as middleman. Instead of needing the bank to maintain records, all the banks clients (“the peer network”) would have access to the same “ledger” and be able to see the transfer of money. This would give the peer network freedom and transparency to maintain the ledger without the need of a central authority (decentralized) nor worry that the transactions can be manipulated.

It is difficult to bring up the topic of blockchain without mention of the polarizing cryptocurrencies (due to extensive and often misleading media coverage). Investors on the bullish side proclaim cryptocurrencies to be the next big technological breakthrough since the internet. Harsh critics on the bearish side of these digital tokens believe that cryptocurrency, more specifically bitcoin, are nothing more than reminiscent of tulip mania of the 1600’s. Regardless of how these investors feel about bitcoin and cryptocurrencies themselves, the one thing that all can agree on is the eminent disruption blockchain technology will cause.

What Is Blockchain?

Over the next few years blockchain technology is poised to have countless applications, especially in the world of finance. Payment processors like Visa (NYSE: V) and Mastercard (NYSE: MA), internet-based companies such as Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK), financial data company Standard & Poors, and even major stock exchange Nasdaq is investing in blockchain. Add almost every bank and finance company to the mix and you have an emerging technology that will receive a whole lot of investment dollars for the foreseeable future.

However, as the case with any emerging technology, it can easily (and currently is) be the target of snake oil salesmen looking to take advantage of uninitiated investors.

The price of a single bitcoin in August of 2017 was about $2,000. Only four short months later in December, the value of one bitcoin rose to an astronomical $19,000. During this time frame, there was a rush of companies looking to capitalize on the cryptocurrency and blockchain craze. There were numerous companies whose stock price soared on the subtlest mention of blockchain and/or cryptocurrency. There was a biotech that switched business models to focus exclusively on blockchain (NASDAQ: RIOT); the IPO of a company that only days later stated it was entering the blockchain industry and on this announcement had its share price surge from $5 – $140 (OTC: LFIN); and the comical rebranding of an iced tea company to one that focuses on blockchain technology (OTC: LBCC). When these companies announced the shift of business into blockchain, the resulting stock performance(s) were outstanding, at their peak returning 800%, over 2,000%, and 400% respectively.

The bottom line is although blockchain is highly talked about in the business world, we are only in the very beginning stages of learning about it as well as educated ourselves of the various applications for the technology. And a major step in the right direction would be to educate the public about this technology and disassociate it from the mention of cryptocurrencies.

Major Developments

  • Jamie Dimon, CEO of JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM), has not only announced heavy R&D in blockchain technology, but he has also stated the intention of Chase bank to roll-out its own digital token
  • Nasdaq (NASDAQ: NDAQ), the 2nd largest stock exchange in the world by market cap, is currently exploring options for blockchain technology to use for its own transactions in addition to supporting external marketplaces that utilize blockchain technology
  • IBM (NYSE: IBM) is a leader in the blockchain movement with the company’s Hyperledger, an open source blockchain initiative with over 250 companies contributing
  • Overstock.com (NASDAQ: OSTK), an eCommerce company with nearly $2 billion in annual revenue, was the first major retailer to accept bitcoin as a payment and to-date has invested over $175 million in blockchain investments

The Future

There is still much to learn from this interesting technological breakthrough.

90% of corporations already admit to experimenting with the technology and over $2 billion has been invested into growing use cases. The industry was valued at $700 million in 2017 and is expected to increase to $60 billion by 2024.

From making payment processing and traditional banking more efficient to the increased use of smart contracts (the digital enforcement and negotiation of contracts), the blockchain industry is set to transform the way we do business just like the internet transformed the way we receive information and communicate.
