Invest in 5G

5G is the fifth generation standard for cellular networks. The new standard will provide immense benefits including increased internet speeds, decreased latency, and improved network efficiency and traffic capacity.

The evolution of wireless technology has gone through multiple phases, or “generations”, over the last 40 years. The 1980’s gave way to the 1st generation of wireless infrastructure (1G) which was only capable of transmitting voice. The 90’s saw the advancement to 2nd generation (2G), which introduced the ability for cell phones to send/receive both text (SMS) and media (MMS), and 3rd generation (3G) which allowed for the transmission of more data than 2G. 2008 was the year the current standard, 4th generation (4G), was released which is faster than 3G and introduced the ability to watch HD video and television.

We are currently advancing to the next generation of wireless technology, 5G, which will have benefits that include speeds 10-100x faster than 4g, 5-10x reduction in latency (the delay in which data is transferred), and the capability of supporting 10-100x the amount of connected devices than 4G can hold.

The Benefits of 5G

The adoption of 5G is crucial for a society that is increasingly dependent on wireless technology infrastructure. This includes the United States, China, Japan, and the European Union and markets of Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East (though adoption of 5G in these regions will occur much later). The emergence of the Internet of Things, or IoT, will see more wireless devices connected to our network than ever before. Statista is projecting 75 million connected devices by 2025 and research done by Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) predicts as much as 45 trillion networked sensors by 2045.

As technologies like augmented and virtual reality, self-driving cars, and smart devices become commonplace, a network infrastructure capable of holding such a large amount of cyber traffic will be imperative. Examples of the major benefits of 5G include the reduced downloading time for data (you would be able to download a file 100x larger than a movie within 3 seconds) and the lag time (latency) of communication between 2 devices dropping to 1 millisecond from 4G’s 15-60 milliseconds. Latency will be crucial for such things like commands to robots and self-driving cars allowing these technologies to respond quickly to inputs.

Because of the major advantages of 5G, companies both domestic and abroad are racing to expand their geographical footprints and market penetration.

Major Developments

  • In one of the more exciting bidding wars in recent memory, shares of spectrum holder Straight Path Communications were trading at $30 a share in January 2017. By April, AT&T (NYSE: T) made a $95 a share offer for the company, only to be out-bid by Verizon a month later. Verizon (NYSE: VZ) kick-started their 5G plans with the $3 billion purchase of Straight Path in April 2017 for $184 a share, a 500% premium from the stocks January trading levels.
  • Verizon teamed up with Samsung (OTC: SSNFL) and Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) to initiate the first 5G trial network in the city of Ann Arbor, MI and since have launched their 5G network in 35 cities across America.
  • AT&T has deployed 5G in cities in the United States including Atlanta, Charlotte, San Antonio, Waco, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Louisville, Jacksonville, Houston, Indianapolis, Dallas, and Raleigh.
  • China is taking an even more aggressive stance on 5G deployment. China Mobile, the largest mobile phone operator in the world, has committed to spend $180 billion over the next several years as they plan on building the largest 5G infrastructure in the world. Another Chinese company, Huawei, already owns 10% of 5G patents which has put them under the lens of top US officials and is the catalyst for the Trump Administrations aggressive stance against them.
  • In an effort to leapfrog over the competition, Sprint and T-Mobile agreed to a monumental merger in 2018 (currently pending approval) in order to specifically gain an advantage in the race for 5G deployment. They even created a website, All for 5G, to further educate and promote this initiative.

The Future

The rollout of 5G officially began in 2019 and mass adaptability is planned by the mid-2020s.

Investment in 5G technology should be around $2.3 billion by 2021 with the market value reaching $251 billion by 2025. The rollout of 5G is anticipated to create more than 3 million jobs in the US alone and account for over $500 million in economic growth. Benefitting from this expansion will be infrastructure hardware providers such as Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC), and Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO), as well as the telecommunication companies themselves like Verizon (NYSE: VZ), AT&T (NYSE: T), and the newly formed T-Mobile/Sprint partnership (NASDAQ: TMUS)

As with previous iterations, 5G in mass-scale will not happen overnight as the 4G standard currently in place will be the standard of use for the foreseeable future. However, within the next 5 – 10 years it is highly feasible, if not certain, that a greater portion of our society will be utilizing this next generation of wireless technology.
