Invest in Health Wearables

The wearables market has experienced significant growth driven by the sales of smart watches. While smart watches and other “smart wearables” are mainly luxury gadgets, there is a growing industry of medical wearable devices that serve an entirely different function. What started with wristbands that track your physical activity, these health wearables can now diagnose ailments, monitor life-threatening conditions, and even collect specific biological data about you.

From wristbands that serve as portable EKG’s to advanced non-invasive glucose monitors, the health wearable industry encompasses all smart wearables which specifically improve and/or monitor your health.

The Rise of Health Wearables

The health wearable device market has come a long way since Fitbit (to be acquired by Alphabet) mania a few years back. Our current technology & data revolution has opened the doors for innovative products in the health wearable space. Medical device makers are teaming up with technology partners, from cloud storage providers to software companies, in order to provide luxury with purpose. This purpose is the seamless integration of comfortable wearable devices with technology that can transfer and monitor information about our health.

While health wearables rose to popularity for simply tracking walking activity, the technology has now branched off to include a wide range of applications while companies that have never had exposure to the health industry are beginning to enter the market.

Major Developments

  • Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) has entered the space forming a partnership with Fitbit. With the use of both Google’s new health API and cloud business (which were created to give the health industry a more convenient way of storing mass amounts of data on patients), Fitbit will link consumer data directly with medical professionals allowing them to receive health data directly from Fitbit’s watches.
  • Wearable biosensors are now being manufactured and are generating quite the buzz. These biosensors are miniature battery-powered devices that can be worn as small bandages and applied directly to the body. These devices will be able to monitor a spectrum of physical activity and behavior including body temperature, pulse rate, and changes in mood, stress, and posture among other uses.
  • Samsung (OTC: SSNFL), Nike (NYSE: NKE), and Apple (NASDAQ: APPL) have all begun marketing their famous smart watches as “medical wearables” having the ability to integrate with a wide range of health apps. An example of this occured in the summer of 2017, when medical device maker Dexcom (NASDAQ: DXCM) and Apple agreed to a deal that would link a glucose sensor manufactured by Dexcom with Apples smartwatch.

The Future

The health wearables market is increasing at a rapid pace as the advantages and use cases rise. Insurance premiums are predicted to fall as consumers health habitats will be easily accessible, health professionals will be able to more efficiently track patients’ health data, and consumers are beginning to accept the idea of wearables assisting in living more health conscious lives.

Juniper research is anticipating the market to reach a value of $50 billion by 2025.

While competition in the space is heating up as non-traditional healthcare companies enter the market, medical device makers and tech corporations alike will continue to innovate and bring about new ways to track and record our biological data. Whether creating more efficient and comfortable versions of traditional medical devices like glucose monitors or electrocardiograms or devising more cutting-edge wearables such as augmented reality contact lenses, the health wearable industry is set to have a wide array of applications and ingenious products.
