Invest in Self-Driving Cars

Self-driving cars, or autonomous vehicles, are vehicles that can be fully operated without the aid of a human being. Combining the use of various technologies including sensors, software, and computer vision, fully autonomous vehicles can completely control and navigate themselves with zero human intervention.

Currently, the extent of autonomy self-driving cars are capable of are measured in levels:

  • Level 0: no autonomy; all systems controlled by a human
  • Level 1: the car may control only 1 automated function at a time, such as cruise control or parking assistance; the car and driver share control of the vehicle
  • Level 2: the vehicle can simultaneously control automated systems, such as being able to control both cruise control and parking assistance; the car has partial autonomy as the driver must monitor the system
  • Level 3: the vehicle can operate autonomously, such as steering, accelerating, or slowing down, but only under certain circumstances; although the driver doesn’t need to have their hands on the steering wheel or feet on the gas / brake pedals, humans still need to be alert and able to intervene if and when the car requests it
  • Level 4: the car can operate fully autonomously under certain circumstances; the difference between level 3 and level 4 is that humans in level 4 can completely transition to the role of passenger, not needing to be alert when the car takes over. Level 4 vehicles are expected to launch in 2021
  • Level 5: no human intervention required; fully autonomous vehicle

Tech Companies and Automakers

Both major tech companies and traditional automakers are racing to be the first with a fully, road-ready autonomous vehicle. Ride-sharing giants Uber and Lyft are developing self-driving cars. Tech companies Alphabet and Apple in addition to innovative startups are putting pressure on traditional car makers. And every major traditional automaker from the U.S.’ Ford and General Motors to Japan’s Toyota and Nissan to Germany’s Daimler and Volkswagen are hard at work fighting off these tech companies looking to penetrate their market. The fight for first-mover advantage in this highly publicized industry has created the perfect battleground for intense competition and innovation which will ultimately benefit the consumer.

However, the industry has had its share of setbacks. In March 2018, Tesla’s Model X SUV caused the death of its driver when it crashed into a concrete highway lane divider. Although the car was only partially autonomous (the vehicles Autopilot system was to blame) it was still the second instance of a Tesla car’s autonomous system failing and causing an accident. Barely two months later in May 2018, Uber’s self-driving car was responsible for the death of a 49-year-old woman when it failed to emergency stop. Uber has since stated that their self-driving car unit, Advanced Technologies Group, is a major factor in the ride-sharing company achieving profitability.

These accidents have sparked renewed discussions regarding the safety of self-driving cars and whether society is ready for the technology. As with any new tech, there is a lot of work to be done before the technology can be consumer-ready. In the meantime, there are plenty of companies who are up for the challenge of becoming the leader in this self-driving car revolution.

Major Developments

  • While Uber and Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) had their hands full with the unfortunate accidents, Waymo (NASDAQ: GOOG) announced a partnership with Jaguar Land Rover to build 20,000 fully autonomous I-Pace cars and weeks later released news that they ordered 62,000 minivans from Chrysler Fiat. Jaguar has also announced a fully electric and autonomous “shuttle pod” for urban residents with testing to begin in 2021.
  • Ford (NYSE: F) has plans to launch a self-driving car service at scale by 2021, currently running self-driving tests in the cities of Miami and London. Not to be outmaneuvered by their rival General Motors, Ford also shelled out $1 billion to fund autonomous driving startup Argo.
  • General Motors (NYSE: GM) has recently announced their investment of $100 million in production of a fully autonomous vehicle.
  • Showcasing the cutthroat nature of competition, the head of Uber’s self-driving unit and ex-Google engineer, Anthony Levandowski, was recently sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing Google’s self-driving car secrets.
  • Possibly the most talked about acquisition of 2017, chipmaker Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) took a monumental step forward in their autonomous driving plans when they purchased sensor company Mobileye for $15.3 billion. The $63.54 per share cash deal was executed at a 33% premium to the prior closing price of $47. The purchase puts Intel in a solid position as they look to gain market share from rival, Nvidia.
  • The highly fragmented and competitive chip industry is a major force behind self-driving cars. Companies like Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), AMD (NASDAQ: AMD), Intel and countless others are all looking to out compete one another by creating chips for not only powering autonomous vehicles, but for the fields of AI, machine learning, and deep learning.

The Future

The autonomous vehicle industry will be one of the more lucrative markets in the years to come, causing much innovation and disruption to traditional businesses. Intel states that the arrival and mass adoption of autonomous vehicles will spur a new passenger economy worth $7 trillion by 2050. The introduction of TaaS, or transportation-as-a-service, is speculated to disrupt car ownership itself as consumers opt to ride in cars they do not own and the trucking industry will be reshaped as human drivers may no longer be needed, though we have sometime for this to materialize, if it ever does. Goldman Sachs predicts that the autonomous vehicle industry will hit a valuation of $96 billion by 2025 and $290 billion by 2035.

Besides the obvious conveniences driverless cars offer, autonomous vehicles (once the technology is perfected) has the potential to reduce car fatalities, save 300,000 lives a decade, and reshape the car insurance industry.
