Invest in Robots and Automation

Robots are machines that, once programmed, can carry out tasks without human assistance; automation is the act of robots carrying out these tasks independently. Historically, these machines had to be programmed and supervised by humans, however, with the emergence of artificial intelligence robots are operating with more autonomy than ever before.

Advanced Automation Technologies

Robots and automation have been used in the industrial space for decades, however, the rise in both consumer robots and more advanced automation technologies is leading to a surge in robotic startups and a “new age” of robots. Innovation in technologies such as computer vision and sensors for industrial applications, as well as personal robots and automated “smart homes” for the consumer, have been profound drivers in this industry. Advances in industrial robots & automation has spearheaded the so-called fourth industrial revolution or Industry 4.0, a term given to the rise of cyber-powered physical infrastructure and machines. Consumer robots & automation has enjoyed popularity due to robot cleaning appliances, smart home automation systems, and the advent and increasing popularity of home voice assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Google Assistant.

As society increasingly looks to replace arduous tasks with machines, the robots & automation industry is set for significant growth over the next several decades.

Major Developments

  • The combination of rising wages and a falling demographic of work-capable citizens has led Chinese president Xi Jinping to declare a “robot revolution” in China. This declaration has led to the creation of the Robotics Industry Development Plan, a goal set by the country to increase its industrial robots capabilities and become the global leader in robotics. China already holds the title of #1 market in the world for industrial robots with over 1/3 of the global market share
  • Faced with a declining population, Japan has looked toward the expansion of robots. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has stated his goal of having a $20 billion robotics market in Japan. They have also manufactured a humanoid life-like robot named Erica who is set to star in movies and a the recently cancelled Kuri, a Jetsons-like “Rosie robot “ who was set to be an at home companion.
  • Some of the largest companies in the world have begun taking the leap into robotics. Walmart has implemented a shelf-scanning autonomous robot in stores across the U.S. This robot scans the store, aisle by aisle, looking for errors such as missing labels and out-of-stock items and then alerts employees. Amazon now houses more than 100,000 robots in its warehouses tasked with carrying product around. HSBC Bank has become the first financial institution in the U.S. to house Softbank’s humanoid robot, Pepper. Premiering at HSBC’s fifth avenue branch in NYC, Pepper will act as a greeter and answer any questions customers may have
  • Once of the most hyped emerging technologies is self-driving cars. Major companies across the world are heavily investing in the autonomous technology as the industry is expected to reach a valuation of roughly $298 billion by 2035.

The Future

The rise of robots & automation has become quite a polarized topic. Some people, like Elon Musk, believe that this rise will lead to mass displacement of jobs and the eventual emergence of a dangerous super intelligence. On the other side of the fence, other experts believe in a more utopian view of robots & automation as assisting the human race in optimizing productivity and causing redundant jobs to become obsolete. Whichever the case, the industry is progressing like never before due to rapid technological achievements and, at least for now, investors can focus on fundamentals and the core businesses opposed to doomsday scenarios.
