Invest in Drones

Unmanned aerial vehicles, or the more popular term drones, are aircraft without a human pilot. Drones are either programmed to fly autonomously or controlled in real-time. Recent advancements in the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence has revolutionized drones into cost-effective flying machines with an endless amount of applications.

The drone industry has exploded over the last decade.

Advancements in Drones

As consumers and civil/government organizations expand their use cases of drones, the military still accounts for a larger piece of the pie with 70% of the global market and has witnessed the most cutting-edge innovation. Defense contractors have been manufacturing faster drones with increased flight times in a range of sizes, from Northrop Grumman’s stealth drone X-47c, which has a wingspan of 62 feet, to the tiny Black Hornet Nano, a 1 inch by 4 inch drone that weighs barely half an ounce. In one of the more groundbreaking inventions of late, a dragonfly was bioengineered into a cyborg insect called DragonflEye, which is a living dragonfly that is fitted with a miniscule backpack of electronics, sensors, and a solar cell and is remote-controlled by human beings.

Whether for military, consumer, or commercial/civilian use, the trends that are currently shaping in the drone industry and the innovative applications that are coming to market cannot be ignored.

Major Events

  • In 2017, Verizon (NYSE: VZ) purchased Skyward, a software company that assists businesses to create and effectively manage drones, for an unreported sum of money. The move was made to expand Verizon’s footprint in emerging technology as these businesses would utilize Verizon’s network infrastructure.
  • AT&T (NYSE: T) is innovating wireless network infrastructure with the launch of their ‘COW’ drone which stands for “Cell on Wings”. Basically a mobile cell tower, COW is able to provide voice, text, and data over a 40-square-mile radius. COW was deployed to Puerto Rico where it provided wireless internet to citizens during Hurricane Maria
  • Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) is looking to disrupt the delivery services industry with the development of Amazon Prime Air, a delivery system that utilizes a fleet of autonomous drones to get ordered products into the hands of customers within 30 minutes. DHL (OTC: DPSGY) is also developing their own drone delivery system in response to Amazon’s ambitions
  • Chinese company, DJI (a private company), currently dominates the global consumer drone industry with a 72% share of the market
  • Drones are proving to be a top option for HAPS Connectivity. HAPS, or high-altitude platform station, is aircraft fixed at high altitudes that beam internet connectivity down to earth. HAPS is being touted as a way for poorer and more secluded regions of the world to gain access to the internet. Facebook (NASDAQ: FB) had tested their own HAPS solar-powered drone named Aquila. This drone (which had a wingspan longer than a Boeing 747) was the result of an initiative to deliver internet to remote areas of the world. Ground stations on earth would beam internet data upwards to a fleet of Aquila’s which in turn will beam the access back to remote areas on earth, all done with the use of lasers, with the intention of Facebook reaching a broader customer base. Facebook scrapped the project in the summer of 2018 opting to collaborate with Airbus on HAPS connectivity. One of the only pure-play drones companies, AeroVironment (NASDAQ: AVAV), is a leader in HAPS and has partnered with the Japanese conglomerate, SoftBank (OTC: SFTBY,) on a new HAPS initiative to gain greater penetration to the emerging 5g and internet of things markets

The Future

According to Goldman Sachs, the drone industry should reach a $100 billion market by 2020. The military will own the lion share of this market at $70 billion, followed by consumer and commercial/civil representing $17 billion and $13 billion markets respectively.

As with any industry, increasing competition by market participants should lead the way for more innovation as well as create a competitive pricing market. And although there are a number of regulatory hurdles for the industry on the horizon (lookin’ at you FAA), as the commercial and civil drone markets find more ways to utilize these machines and as drones become more cost effective for the consumer, expect the industry to prosper in the years ahead.
