Invest in AR / VR

Virtual Reality, or VR, is the use of a simulated environment to create a real world immersive experience. For example, you can be in your living room and while wearing a VR headset be immersed in a simulated version of a tropical beach. Your eyes would see a sandy beach and crystal blue water while your body is standing a few feet from your couch.

Augmented Reality, or AR, is computer-generated imagery superimposed over real world surroundings. While VR completely changes your surroundings and immerses you in a different world, AR simply just adds a digital layer over the physical, real world. For instance, if you’re walking in the middle of a major city wearing a pair of AR smart glasses you’d be able to view step-by-step GPS navigation through the lens while you walk toward your destination. By wearing smart glasses, you would have GPS navigation (“computer-generated imagery”) being shown over the real, physical world around you.

Another form of “reality” is Mixed Reality. Mixed Reality, or MR, brings together real world and digital elements allowing the user to interact with both digital and physical real world items and environments (the glove system used by Tom Cruise in the film “Minority Report” is a perfect example).

Smart Glasses

Smart glasses went mainstream when Google’s Google Glasses were introduced for the consumer back in 2013. Although the idea of a wearable computer was sexy, the combination of a $1,500 price point, unappealing aesthetics, concerns of privacy, and subpar marketing caused Google’s smart glasses experiment to fail to live up to its hype (not to single out Google, several prominent companies have tried and failed to succeed in producing a viable product for the consumer). In 2015, Google pulled their glasses from the market and although they re-launched the product in 2017 (with an exclusive focus on enterprise customers), it proved we are still some time away for the mass adoption of augmented reality smart glasses . . . at least for the consumer. While the average person isn’t wearing a pair of AR smart glasses regularly, the opportunity for this technology is extensive on a commercial level, as evident in the fact that Google switched their focus for Google Glass from consumer to enterprise markets.

While the AR smart glasses market is heating up, the VR market is steadily growing as well. Leading the pack and controlling roughly 80% of the VR market are: Sony’s PlayStation VR, Facebook’s Oculus Rift, HTC’s Vive, and Microsoft’s HoloLens.

VR Head-Mounted Displays (HMD), unlike their AR counterparts, are not meant to be worn like a pair of glasses. They’re large, clunky, and completely encapsulates the user’s field of vision. Although we’re beginning to experiment with the use of virtual reality in healthcare, education, and even courtrooms, the lion share of applications are still in the fields of gaming and entertainment.

Major Developments

  • Shipping and logistics company, DHL (OTC: DPSGY), equipped their warehouse workforce with smart glasses and reported a 25% faster production time as well as the elimination of errors. Boeing (NYSE: BA), John Deere (NYSE: DE), General Electric (NYSE: GE), and Volkswagen (OTC: VWAPY) have all initiated pilot programs
  • VR is contributing heavily to companies in the gaming industry. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: EA) and Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI) have each invested extensively in the technology and with the emergence of the popular eSports leagues, the gaming firms are poised to disrupt entertainment as we know it.
  • Tech companies, such as Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), have begun investing in the AR smart glass space. Amazon has funded $150 million into AR start-up North and Qualcomm has formed partnerships with smart glass companies as the chipmaker looks to be the top supplier of chips to the AR smart glasses industry. Facebook (NASDAQ: FB), Intel (NASDAQ: INTC), and Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) have also either bought out or took ownership in HMD and smart glass entities in addition to investing in both VR and AR in-house
  • Police officers in China are now wearing smart glasses equipped with facial-recognition technology in order to identify suspected criminals

The Future

As new companies and use cases emerge, IDC expects the worldwide AR / VR wearable market to reach 68 million units by 2022 with a healthy compounded annual growth rate of 52%. Statista predicts the valuation of the entire augmented and virtual reality market to reach nearly $200 billion globally within the same time frame. Forrester Research predicts that 14.4 million US workers will be equipped with AR smart glasses by 2025.

Whether virtual reality headsets for gaming or augmented reality glasses for the workplace and eventually consumer, both AR and VR are poised to have an exciting ride over the next several years. Apple is now entering the market, new wearables are being equipped with voice recognition, and start-ups are beefing up competition as they look to innovate the space.
