Invest in 3D Printing

3D Printing or Additive Manufacturing (AM) is the process of printing physical objects with a 3D printer. The 3D printing process encompasses the use of a computer to render a 3D model, the actual printer to make it, and layering material. Material which can be used to 3D print objects include plastic, ceramic (powder), concrete, metal, chocolate, and even cells to make human tissue (bioprinting). Typically, the 3D object is printed layer-by-layer from the bottom up although different methods have come to market.

3D printing was all the rage in the early 2010’s. From 2012 to 2014, many companies in the 3D printing space experienced dramatic increases in the price of their stock, share prices rising anywhere between 100% to  700% at their highs, driven by investor anticipation of every home housing a 3D printer across the U.S. Products including jewelry, makeup, parts for broken appliances, clothes, and even food, were expected to be created from the comfort of your home with the use of these wonder machines.

However, investors soon realized that consumers were unwilling to pony-up for the expensive technology. Once this reality set in and the hysteria wore off, 3D printing stocks crashed back to earth wiping out billions in market value. A lot of money was made for those who rode the 3D printing wave, but plenty of money was also lost by the time the dust settled. The 3D printing rush between 2012 and 2014 is a prime example of overhype for a new technology.

Although 3D printing stocks have lost a ton of value and the industry itself has been a focal point for overhyped technology, it would be unfair to say that the 3D printing industry is going nowhere, especially with the reemergence of the popularity for 3d printing due to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. New companies have emerged catering to the consumer 3D printing space offering affordable printers that cost only a few hundred dollars. And though more consumers have begun to adopt printers at these new affordable price points, the major opportunity lies in the manufacturing sector.

3D Printers

When compared to traditional methods of manufacturing, 3D printers have proven to be more cost efficient and valuable in time management. Economies of scale, unlike traditional manufacturing, are somewhat nonexistent in 3D printing as the number of units produced have almost no effect on production cost (this is only for production cost and excludes the cost of the raw materials). What this means is whether manufacturing one unit or one thousand, the cost to produce the unit remains linear, opposed to traditional methods of manufacturing where the cost of one unit decreases with volume. One could argue that 3D printers have no advantage when manufacturing units at volume due to the lack of economies of scale (though companies are beginning to remedy this). The value for 3D printers, however, may be in economies of scope. Because 3D printers are extremely flexible in what they can produce, manufacturers have found that by having one machine produce an array of units increases margins by driving down costs. And with an unlimited number of objects a 3D printer can produce, manufacturers can be quite creative in how best to manufacture units at scale.

Corporate Events

  • In 2015, Hewlett-Packard spun off its PC and printing division into the newly formed company, HP Inc (NYSE: HPQ). In a March 2018 interview with CNBC’s Jim Kramer, HP’s CEO, Dion Weisler, stated that the 3D printing market isn’t “gigantic as of yet”, but when on to explain that “3D printing is a question of when, not if”. According to Weisler, 3D printing has the potential to disrupt the $12 trillion manufacturing industry. Not only has HP expanded its footprint in the industry with their acquisition of Samsung’s printing division for $1 billion, but the company’s patents may give them an edge as the tech can print 10x faster at a fraction of the cost of its competitors. *Dion Weisler is no longer CEO as he stepped down in 2019 due to health reasons*
  • NASA is looking to build a 3D habitat for deep space exploration as well as recently announced that more than 100 parts of their space capsule, Orion, were 3D printed.
  • Recently, surgeons used a multi-material 3D printer for the life-saving surgery of a two-year-old boy. The printer produced a three dimensional model of the boys anatomy with incredible detail which allowed surgeons to determine the feasibility of a transplant
  • The defense industry is emerging as a major beneficiary of 3D printing. Partnerships with 3D printing companies have been formed to manufacture parts for navy ships; the Army is looking to utilize 3D printing technology for the use in producing food, human body parts and body armor, as well as printing ballistic missiles; and other military groups are taking it a step further by planning on using 3D printers to construct “soft robots”

The Future

With the number of applications for 3D printing rising coupled with the number of organizations willing to utilize the technology, companies in the 3D printing space will ultimately benefit. IDC states that worldwide spending on 3D printers will grow from $12 billion in 2018 to $20 billion by 2021, a compounded annual growth rate of 20%.

Even though the 3D printing industry has been the epitome of an overhyped technology to the investor, it seems the tide is beginning to turn. This industry is one to watch closely as more and more use cases begin to emerge.
